The UK’s big five supermarkets are engaged in an ongoing battle for market share, frequently changing position in the rankings, overtaking each other in turn. Over the recent Easter holiday, it appears that Sainsbury’s came out on top, according to the latest figures.

Of the five largest British supermarket chains, Sainsbury’s showed the most significant growth during Easter, sending Wm Morrison back into fourth place. Until Easter, Wm Morrison had seen the highest growth rate.

In the four weeks ended 18 April, Sainsbury’s reported sales growth of 14.7 per cent as compared with the same period in 2008. It was followed by ASDA, which reported 13.7 per cent year-on-year growth, Tesco with 9.9 per cent and Morrison at 9.8 per cent, according to Nielsen’s figures. The data showed Tesco starting to recover ground slightly.

Mike Watkins, the senior manager of retailer services at Nielsen, commented on Sainsbury’s performance. “This growth can be attributed to shoppers trading up for the holiday period but also to the strong in store offers and price cuts that attracted new shoppers into Sainsbury for their Easter shopping.”

For all supermarkets, average sales were up by 10.5 per cent.
