Apple launches lighter, faster iPad 2

by Harry Oldfield

Apple has launched an upgraded version of its popular iPad, in a bid to maintain its lead over competitors in the expanding market for tablet computing. Chief executive Steve Jobs put in a surprise appearance for the launch of iPad 2.

The launch, held last night in San Francisco, had been eagerly awaited by hordes of Apple and iPad fans. Jobs, whose health continues to be a subject of much discussion, introduced a second-generation device that offers a range of software and hardware upgrades but falls short of the expectations of some observers.

Sales of iPad 2 launch in the USA on 11 March and will be available for purchase in the UK on 25 March. The new device comes with two built-in cameras, one on the front and one in the back. Both of the cameras can take photographs and record video.

Buyers of iPad 2 will get a new pre-installed app called Photo Booth. The app lets people produce distorted photos of themselves for sharing with friends.

With Facetime, iPad2 users can now enjoy video calls to other iPad 2 users, as well as people using the iPhone 4 or Apple’s latest iPod Touch. The latest iPad is about 30 per cent thinner than its predecessor. It also weighs slightly less than the original iPad and, for the first time, is available in white.

Pricing for the iPad 2 is the same as for the model it replaces. In the USA, the cheapest version of iPad 2 will cost $499.
