Co-operative retailer Scotmid has announced its plans for a multi-million pound expansion effort that will see its semichem discount pharmacy presence extend into England, after experiencing significant earnings growth despite current economic conditions.
The Edinburgh-based company is looking at opening 10 new semichem stores in northern England later this year, hoping to replicate its success in Scotland – at a time when many shoppers are making the move to discount chains to save money.
“Semichem is a discounter, that is a good place to be in the current environment,” said Scotmid chief executive John Brodie. “We have spent several years sorting out the format and the product offering for semichem. It’s a concept that works in Scotland and Northern Ireland so we will continue to roll that out further south.”
Semichem was acquired by Scotmid in 1995, and thus far has just one branch in England, in Berwick upon Tweed, just south of the Scottish border.
The plan to open stores in England is coming at a time when many retailers are finding the going to be rough, and is a significant sign of Scotmid’s confidence in the business.
In Scotland there are currently 105 semichem branches, and 25 in Northern Ireland.
