Sir Alex Ferguson takes charge at rivals
by Adam Richards
Sir Alex Ferguson has issued a warning that his side’s title that Manchester United will only improve this year as they seek to retain the Premier League trophy.
United ended 2009 just two points off league leaders Chelsea and just two points ahead of Arsenal, who have a game in hand, after the 5-0 demolition of Wigan on Wednesday.
The return of Nemanja Vidic from injury, in particular, has given Ferguson the opportunity to select something like a settled back four in the last to games and United has responded with easy wins over Hull and Wigan.
It has put them in a good position to push on in the New Year, despite Chelsea remaining at the top of the table, while Arsenal’s recent form has underlined their credentials at the title.
However Ferguson has insisted the return of full form of a number of United’s defenders including Rio Ferdinand, Johnny Evans and John O’Shea would provide his side with the perfect boost during their title run-in.
However Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was not so buoyant, as the defeat leaves his side just a point off the relegation zone at the end of the year, and he admits he has a lot of work to do if Wigan is to avoid finishing in the bottom three.
He said the loss was extremely disappointing, and the team needed to be solid in order to earn the right to be on the ball and express them, but it turned out to be the other way around.
He said the team will start again on Monday, and in situation like this players must show how important they want to be for the football club, otherwise, the team cannot continue like that.
