Gordon Brown vows to get Britain moving
by Sally Davies
Prime Minister Gordon Brown will use his New Year’s message to vow to get Britain moving forward again and urge voters not to destroy the recover.
He will promise to go for growth and deliver a decade of shared prosperity, while reducing the deficit in a fair and sensible way.
Prior to the general election, which must be called by June, he will warn that the economy is still in a fragile state.
The Tories have described his message as a last throw of the dice.
His message will outline priorities for 2010, in which Labour is seeking to be re-elected for a fourth successive term in government.
These are to include cutting deficit, cleaning up politics, reforming public services and maintaining Britain’s global strength.
He will vow to create fairly shared prosperity, and contrast that with those who say they must plan for a decade of austerity and unfairness where the majority lose out while the privileged few protect themselves.
The PM will predict that unemployment will begin to drop in 2010 and more small businesses are to open.
He will also warn not to wreck the economy recovery, which is still fragile and must be nurtured to the interests of those who had been hardest hit by the recession.
Some political analysts have described the speech as being the commencement of the 2010 general election campaign.
