Marks and Spencers to import NZ sheep for project

by Adam Richards

Agri-Food and BioScences Institute, based in the Northern Irish capital Belfast, will undertake what is being called The Sustainable Lamb Project. As briefly mentioned, the venture is being funded by Marks & Spencer in order to assess impacts of using Rissington Breedline breeding systems for sheep and improved Primera genetics.

The researchers working on the project hope to discover which impact high quality genetics have on meat-eating quality as well as consistency, animal welfare, carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emission, rates of on-farm productivity, and also processing efficiency.

A dozen or so Primera rams directly from Rissington Breedline have been shipped to Britain already in September 2010 as part of a two year-long project. tMarks & Spencer’s Agricultural Manager, Mr Steve McLean, says that UK lamb production will continue to fall and that here’s a growing need to unearth more sustainable production models to ensure the continuity of UK supplies for Marks & Spencer.

He continued to explain that goal of Marks and Spencer is to produce lamb that is guaranteed to be tender and succulent in addition to flavoursome every time. There is also a need to produce within sustainable supply chains while complying with the company’s commitment to continuing to produce meat to environmental standards, McLean added.
