The sharpest price rise for a single item in a “grocery basket watch” list over the past year has been in the price of a pack of bangers, which increased by 50 per cent.

The second-largest rise was in the price of jam, which was up by 47 per cent. Only bananas, of the 25 items in the basket, actually dropped in price, falling from 78p to 71p per kilo, due to price wars among UK supermarkets.

The Grocer magazine was involved in compiling the items in the grocery basket. It was found that the overall cost of items was 18.7 per cent more than a year ago – which is more than six times the inflation rate.

Alex Beckett, food and drink editor at The Grocer, said: “The price of Wall’s sausages could be because of declining pork supplies in the UK and Europe.”

The increase in jam prices was explained by a 30 per cent rise in the price of sugar since January of this year.

It was noted that there were signs food price inflation was beginning to abate and that shoppers may find they have a bit more to spend. In April, the total cost of the shopping basket declined by 1.3 per cent from March.

Beckett noted: “The dip in the overall cost of living shows retailers are having more success in keeping a lid on food inflation.”

New statistics are due this week, which will show the cost of living decreasing, with the inflation rate dropping from 3.2 to 2.8 per cent.
