Bets taken on white Christmas
by Sally Davies
Bets are being taken on a white Christmas as the Met Office report there will be a moderate risk of snow showers of between five and ten centimetres tomorrow, especially in the morning.
The South East and East Midlands as well as the east coast could be affected.
Temperatures throughout the day may not rise above freezing point in places, with a chilling easterly wind making it feel even colder in some regions.
Tony Waters from the Met Office said some locations could see a light covering of snow, but heavier snow is likely in the eastern regions today and tomorrow.
Central and southern regions of England could also experience temperatures as low as -5C.
Meanwhile, the Met Office has not yet confirmed whether there would be a white Christmas, bookmakers William Hill have already begun taking bets on whether or not it happens.
One punter from Derbyshire stands to collect over £14,000 if it snows on Christmas Day.
The forecast means the firm has taken a record number of early bets with 17,800 already placed in their outlets alone.
William Hill reduced the odds on snow in London on Christmas Day from 8/1 to 9/2, with the lowest temperature in the UK being recorded this winter now 20/1 from 25/1.
Spokesman for William Hill, Rupert Adams, said the gamble is snowballing and what started as a flurry is turning into an avalanche, and the company is now snowed under with bets.
