Britons benefit from shopping sprees in New York

British tourists are planning to head to New York over the festive holiday season will benefit from saving up to 70 per cent following the recent strengthening of the pound against the dollar.
Even though the price of items has risen in both cities by 1 per cent in the last 12 months, the sterling has improved against the dollar by 13 per cent during the same period and by more than 23 per cent since its lowest point in March this year.
Britons travelling to the US on shopping trips have become more prevalent since the doubling of the duty-free allowance for British visitors to £340 per person earlier this year.
A recent study conducted by the Post Office this week, which compared the price of 25 popular items in major stores in London and New York, found that Britons could make dramatic savings on most items.
The most sought-after Christmas toys were, on average, 27 per cent cheaper in New York, with a Rubik’s 360 puzzle nearly 50 per cent cheaper in New York compared with London, while the new Barbie & the Three Musketeers Doll cost 41 per cent less in New York.
The only other item surveyed to be more expensive in New York was the Nintendo Wii game console, which costs £233.60 in New York compared with £214.99 in London.
