The Greatest 80s Movie

by Amarjeet Kalsi

When thinking of this I had to come up with a definition of a great 80s movie. I was faced with shock, hope, misery, but at the end, joy.

Huh?

The first PC virus was launched the same year as the best film of the 80s

I am going to immediately disqualify certain movies, not to offend anyone, but just to make sense of what the decade gave to us and what people did in the 80s. The definition of a great 80s movie is:

A movie that gives integrity to the Fashion, Music, People and the beginning of a new type of social structure… cult status.

The movies that I have taken out are movies that I love dearly and for me would spring mind as being great 80s movies, the likes of The Terminator, Big, Back to the Future etc. These movies and more can’t be added to the list because they just don’t have that secret ingredient: the cheese factor. That’s right folks, it’s like junk food, and it’s bad for you, but you can’t help but like it. Like Will Ferrell once said: ‘ONCE IT HITS YOUR LIPS!’

In the 80s there was a surge of talent coming through that were not like the laidback generations of the decades before them that hold credit for giving us great art. This was a wave of energy forged by the people in Hollywood and the industries that relate to creating an image. The creativity was consistent and this was even found in the cheese-filled movies that have cult followings. The movies had youngsters in clusters playing roles that would always complement each other. This was made apparent in Footloose, The Breakfast club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

The number of movies fitting this angle chosen is substantial, so I am not really going to bore you with the conventional count down. Many people choose a familiar pattern, one that I found time and time again when I came to looking at other people’s opinions. No reason was given for their chosen top 10, they just bang it out and you live by it. The pattern emerged: break in with a few movies that you may know, that are cult, then a smidge of big movies, a few you will not have heard of, soften the blow with a very familiar piece of film work and whack, their a definitive movie at number one.

Halleys Comet also flew close the same year as the best movie of the 80s.

The reason for my definitive great 80s movie is something that could get me disowned by my friends and maybe laughed at by others. The movie that I have chosen has given everything back that was provided to make this flick. There is a sense of fashion that just never goes away, that we choose to wear on an everyday basis. I know I have one of those jackets and girls seem to like it. The music is pure cheese and I like that because whilst we men keep it inside we actually don’t mind this movie. The location was California. Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Mecca of the 80s. The stars in this show were chosen as they were predominantly rising and were seen as the future of Hollywood, but just as the tail of the cheesy 80s movies goes, most ended up a bit strange and some didn’t know what to do after the fame hit them. We wear the same clothes, we give ourselves nicknames based on this movie, and music videos get made in honour of it. That is why I chose…

Top Gun!
