Why a Mac is much cooler than a PC

by Adam Dunning

According to the commercials the Mac is the cool computer. It also has the reputation for being the computer of choice for artists, graphic designers and other similar industry experts. Although the last few years has seen the Mac and the PC move closer together, there are still some differences that will make the Mac the best choice for your needs.

See - super cool!

See - super cool!

The Mac may not be the first choice for every user on the market, but there are plenty of reasons that every user should put Mac into consideration when looking for the next computer for home or work.

1. Microsoft Office is now available for Mac which means that you can create Word, PowerPoint and Excel files can be created on your Mac and are fully compatible with Windows. It is even possible to get new software that will allow you to run both Mac and Windows side by side without the need to restart.

Yes. You can pollute your Mac!

2. A Mac comes with a number of different devices preinstalled to help with the ease of use. In most cases you will be able to connect your device (printer, camera or hard drives) and you will be good to go. This means that you have less uploading and configuring to do when you first set up your computer. It also means that adding new devices is easier along the way.

3. Apple makes both the software and the hardware for the Mac, so the systems are literally designed to work together. This usually means less trouble getting the computer to do what you want and less possibility of a crash.

4. The Mac is going green. The computer is made with recyclable glass and aluminum. The newest computers are designed to run on the power of a single light bulb. Most importantly they are made without many of the harmful toxins that are found in other computers (particularly mercury).

Macs are Green, even though they're white!

5. Mac has been designed with a trip-proof power cord. If you trip over the cord then it easily detaches itself from the computer allowing you to avoid a costly spill. This is just one more innovations that shows how Apple is thinking about the consumer.
6. The Mac is one of the easiest computers to use. It has built in video tutorials to make learning the ins and outs of the software easier for users of all levels. There is a consistent look and feel from one application to the next to make the learning curve even smaller. The simple drag-and-drop based actions mean that any user will fill comfortable with the applications. It is the work of all of these components together that make Mac one of the most user friendly computers around.

7. Mac is the industry leader in keyboard comfort. It is also top of the line in design aesthetics. Not only does the computer work well for the user, but it also looks good in the process.

Mmmmmmmm - comfy!

8. All Mac computers are made by Apple. This stream lines the quality control situation. The method of having all the computers and software made under one roof allows for the company to maintain more consistency in the quality of the product that is produced.

9. The Mac offers more security to users. The operating system is more closed than the PC and hackers, viruses and other common ailments are not an issue. Although some experts argue that Mac is not a target because Hackers go for the big news and there are just more PCs than Macs for making that news, security is still security and Mac has fewer problems than the PC.

10. Mac is still the industry leader for doing film editing work, web site design, creating music demos and other creative endeavors. It is the best computer for the design fields, the music industry and the film industry.
There is plenty of variety in the computer industry these days that cover a wide array of interests and needs. The Mac manages to top the lists in many of the different categories that users are looking for these days. The ability to use the Windows programs, the ease of use of the Mac and the security of the system are just some of the top reasons that many people are looking to the Mac for the next purchase.

Look how cool it is?

The slick look of the Mac, the ease of use for applications and the friendliness towards the artistic fields are just a few more reasons that Mac is increasing in popularity. There may have been a time when the Mac was the underdog in the computer industry, but the quality of product and ease of use have helped pushed the Mac to the front of the line. The next time that you need to purchase a computer – notebook or desktop – you will know the reasons that Mac should be at the top of your list.

What do you think? Do Macs rule or are PCs the best? Why not comment and let us know?

"I wandered on here a little while ago and I absolutely can not get enough! Please keep writing!"

"Perfect effort!"

"I just like using Apple stuff, doesn't matter about logic. I find I swear fewer times when using a mac and I just find it "funner". Only reason I got my first mac was because I wanted a good match to a unix dev environment and couldn't get ubuntu to work with my wifi network on laptop and I got sick of wasting my time trying. true story :)"

"The security is all in UNIX which Apple adopted, and a Mac now is just PC hardware with a closed-source distribution of UNIX installed. They lost my love when they dropped RISC...BURN!!!"

"@Sam - you win my friend for a perfect come back. Long live the Mac! I mean, PC, PC! ;)"

"Been a Mac driver for ages. Work with a PC at work. The difference couldn't be bigger. I heart my Mac something stupendous."

"Submitted that accidentally! I'll address a few of your points: 1. Office for Mac isn't 100% compatible with Office for Windows. It's also hideous to use compared to the Windows version. 2. So does Windows. And I've had to install drivers for plenty of stuff on Macs. 3. Apple don't make the hardware, it's all contracted out to Asus et al. 4. New laws were passed in Europe (RoHS, WEEE, etc) which mean that no electronic product is allowed to contain harmful materials, Apple are just better at using it for publicity. 5. This is a real love/hate thing, personally I find it intensely annoying. 6. Depends what you're used to. It also feels too dumbed down a lot of the time, power user type stuff (like not wanting it to make the start up noise, or anything Apple have decided you don't want to do!) can be very difficult, and usually requires 3rd party software. 7. Source? I don't believe this for a minute, Mac keyboards get worse and less ergonomic with each iteration. They look cool but are horrible to type on. 8. See above: no they're not. 9. Again, no. It IS a market share thing. There are several viruses for Mac in the wild now and there will be more to come. Check out this year's pwn2own contest winner on zdnet explaining how they're actually easier to exploit than PCs. 10. It used to be, but (working in a creative industry myself) is becoming less so as Apple become more consumer-focused rather than professionally-focused. The high prices and exceptionally poor hardware/build quality compared to Macs of old are starting to put people off. I use Macs and PCs, I prefer PCs but I wouldn't say 'I am a PC', I own plenty of both. Just thought I'd correct some of the lies and untruths you're promoting here in typical fanboy fashion!"
